The Börger THW pump is a series of emergency-response pumping units developed to the technical requirements of the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (Technisches Hilfswerk, THW). It is designed for dealing with floods, pipeline ruptures and major industrial accidents. The design is built for extreme conditions with minimum set-up time.

Design and drives

The pump is mounted on a reinforced frame with roll bars and lifting points. The power end is an air-cooled diesel engine with an enlarged fuel tank for 6–10 hours of operation. A hydraulic drive from an external source is available as an option. All controls are brought out to a single vandal-resistant panel.

Technical specifications

  • Capacity — from 200 to 600 m³/h
  • Self-priming — up to 9 m
  • Discharge pressure — up to 10 bar
  • Pumping of water with solids up to 80 mm, silt and petroleum products
  • Set-up time — from 3 minutes
  • Tip-over protection and operation on slopes up to 15°

Application scenarios

The main duties are dealing with flooding, pumping from receiving tanks during petroleum product spills and emergency emptying of process vessels. Emergency and civil protection services in Kazakhstan use similar pumps to work in flooded areas and to deal with the aftermath of spring floods. Its versatility across pumped media also makes the unit suitable for industrial plants with their own emergency service.

Advantages of the THW series

The series was developed to strict reliability requirements: extended component life, protection against contamination and ease of service without special tools. MIP technology allows the pump to be restored to working order quickly in the field. Self-priming and dry-running capability are critical in emergency work — the operator loses no time on preparation.

Selection and configuration

For routine duties at plants with regular pumping, lighter models are suitable — the mobile pumping unit and the tanker-mounted pump. The rotary pumping principle in detail — in the article on Börger rotary lobe pumps.
