Why a grinder is needed upstream of a pump
When pumping wastewater, sludge, biomass and process liquids, the stream often contains solids — fibres, rags, polymers, bones, branches, metal objects. Letting such objects into a pump causes a number of problems:
- Blockages and seizing — long fibrous material wraps around impellers and lobes, bringing the equipment to a stop.
- Premature wear — solid particles cause abrasive wear of the housing and the wetted end of the pump.
- Seal failure — sharp objects damage mechanical seals and cause leaks.
- Costly downtime — every stop to clean the pump costs time and labour.
Installing a Börger grinder upstream of the pump solves these problems completely. All solids are reduced to a size that passes freely through the pump without causing blockages or damage.
How the Börger grinder works
The grinder works by cutting solids between two cutting rotors turning towards each other. The liquid stream enters the working chamber, solid particles pass between the blades and are ground to the required size, after which the flow continues along the pipeline to the pump.
The rotor speed, the blade geometry and the clearances between them are chosen to give effective grinding with minimum hydraulic resistance. This allows the grinder to be built into existing pipework without a significant loss of capacity.
The cutting unit is designed so that blades can be replaced quickly in the field. MIP (Maintenance In Place) technology, used throughout Börger equipment, allows wear parts to be changed without removing the grinder from the pipeline.

The basic grinder model for most industrial duties. Used at treatment works, in livestock farming and at biogas plants. It deals effectively with fibrous and elastic material — rags, polythene, rope and long fibres. Capacity up to 1000 m³/h depending on the size.
